“Medicare and Medicaid combined cost $17.8 trillion, while our combined federal deficits over that same span were $17.9 trillion. In essence, our deficit problem is a Medicare and Medicaid problem.” (General Welfare, p. 283)

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2022, Medicare spending was $944.3 billion and Medicaid spending was $805.7 billion, for a total of $1.75 trillion- a far cry from Project 2025’s estimated $17.8 trillion. Medicare only accounts for 13% of the federal budget, roughly equal to our spending on National Defense.
