“The Transportation Security Administration [should] be privatized.” (Common Defense, Dept. of Homeland Security, Page 134)

The TSA protects the nation’s transportation systems and collaborates with local and foreign partners to develop safety policies. The TSA was established after 9/11. Before this, the US had privatized security handled by companies under individual airlines, leading to inconsistencies in screening procedures and training.

Advocates for privatizing the TSA point to potential cost savings and more accountability. However, as is the risk with privatizing anything, pursuit of cutting costs could also lead to cutting corners and poorer conditions for workers. It could also lead to different security measures at different airports, an annoyance to passengers and potentially a threat to national security.
