“The NFIP [National Flood Insurance Program] should be wound down and replaced with private insurance starting with the least risky areas currently identified by the program.” (Common Defense, Dept. of Homeland Security, Page 154)

For some Americans now living in areas where floods are more damaging, the NFIP is the only way they are able to insure their homes against flood damage. Additionally, the cost to homeowners is often cheaper than private insurance. Closing the NFIP would force homeowners to purchase more expensive private insurance they may not be able to afford for coverage that doesn’t match what they are able to receive through NFIP.
