Medicare Advantage (MA) provides coverage through private insurance companies while original Medicare provides coverage through the government. While both options have their merits, this policy will lead to gaps in coverage for vulnerable populations. MA plans have limited provider networks, especially in rural areas, so people with complex conditions may not be able to find care. Additionally, switching from MA to original Medicare is difficult, so beneficiaries will face barriers transitioning plans if they don’t like the (default) MA option.
